“I could have taken an uber,” I told Sheppard as he pulled into the parking lot of my apartment.

“You are drunk,” he told me.

“I am not drunk. I’m buzzed,” I informed him. After the latest revelation I had to take the edge off. And vodka and beer did just that.

“You are wearing one shoe,” Sheppard told me.

I rolled my eyes. “It’s in the back seat. I know I am wearing one shoe.”

“And you are trying to get out of the car without taking yoru seatbelt off,” he pointed out, he undid my seat belt for me.

I climbed out my side feeling gravity trying to pull me back into a sitting position. Sheppard made it around and grabbed me by the arm and got me to my feet.

“What are you doing?” I asked as he scooped me up, holding me in his arms.

“Saving you from yourself,” he told me. “You don’t ride the elevator. And I am pretty certain you would plummet to your death if you tried climbing those stairs.”

I wrapped my arms around his neck and held on. He kicked my door shut and headed for the apartment doors.

“All this time,” he said. “I’ve been looking for the princess and she was at another castle.”

I pressed my face into his shoulder, feeling a little queasy. “What is that supposed to mean?”

“The video game. Mario makes it to the end, he defeats the guy to save the princess and then they tell him his princess is at another castle.”

I wasn’t sure what any of that meant or why he was telling me that at that moment. I had a long day, and I was going to have an even longer night now that I had new stuff to worry about.

“Does he ever find her?” I hiccupped. “Or does he just give up and stop trying?”

We made it to the door. Sheppard let me punch the number in the key pad before he gave me an answer. “Mario doesn’t give up because that’s the only thing he wants. To save the princess.”

“Mario sounds sweet,” I told him.

He agreed, starting up the steps. “He’s more of a bad ass than sweet. Most people don’t give him enough credit.”

He lifted my chin and pecked me on the lips. “The princess should really consider using her elevator if she is going to get drunk more often.”

“Are you saying I’m too heavy for you to carry?” I slapped his mouth.

“Who said I was saying anything about you?” He made it to the top and set me on my feet. “You’re drunk. Now give me your keys so I can unlock the door.”

I handed them over. And watched him make it over to my door. He looked back at me. “Don’t stand there, you’re going to fall down the stairs, and all of this will be for nothing.”

I shoved him. “I am fine.” He got the door unlocked and let me go in first. I kicked my other shoe off and fought with the button of my romper trying to get out of it so I could pee.
